This species grows as an emergent in shallow water, but is often found growing in moist soils. It cannot tolerate the deeper water and wave action of its close relative Schoenoplectus acutus (Hardstem Bulrush). It is usually found in colonies and can be aggressive. It provides habitat for many species of animals and the seedheads are an important food source for wetland birds.
